A different kind of Marine Mammal Rehabilitation

For several weeks, our marine mammal friend has been undergoing a thorough and much needed rehabilitation program.

Most troubled sea lions in the Bay Area head to the Marin Headland’s Marine Mammal center for some TLC before being released back into the wild. However, our Sea Lion statue is receiving a little more specialized treatment plan, right here in Sausalito’s working waterfront.

Machinists and welders at two home-grown fabrication shops, Marine Made and Universal Sonar Mount are undertaking repairs to the damages sustained in January storms. As seen above, the Sea Lion gets refinished with the help of a sandblaster. While some residents may have found the “classic” green finish endearing, this was simply tarnishing that resulted from bronze statue weathering in harsh elements over time. At it’s original debut, the statue would have shone brilliantly in a classy bronze.

Welder at work.

Keep an eye out for the Sea Lion’s grand re-appearance this summer at community events and gatherings. Preparations are underway to reveal the renewed statue by summer’s end.
