Sea Lion in Trouble

In harsh winter storms early on January 8th, Sausalito’s Sea Lion sculpture was knocked from it’s rock mount and lay damaged in the rocky intertidal zone off of the Bridgeway Ave. waterfront path.

As the official stewards of the sculpture, the Sausalito Foundation will spearhead a fundraiser in order to make necessary repairs to the sculpture, and replace it on its rightful perch at the water’s edge. Repairs will include patching cracks in the Sea Lion’s body, fabricating a robust bronze pedestal, and installing anodes to prevent corrosion.

At high tide, the sculpture is almost completely submerged. Rising sea levels have had an increasing impact on the Bridgeway waterfront path and likely contributed to excelled weathering of the Sea Lion.

Almost ten years ago, the Sausalito Foundation led restoration efforts in a prior rescue when the Sea Lion was thrown from its base in 2004 storms.

Stay tuned for details regarding the fundraiser and restoration efforts.
